Клубный танец шаффл впервые появился в Мельбурне (Австралия) в конце 80-х годов прошлого века. В то время была популярна музыка в стиле acid house, и шаффл стал одним из нескольких танцев, появившихся благодаря этому направлению. Основу техники шаффла составляют быстрые, «джазовые» танцевальные движения, но в наше время танец можно танцевать практически под любую электронную клубную музыку.
С самого момента появления шаффл активно развивался, в основном, в ночных клубах и на рейв-тусовках. Музыка в стиле техно постепенно заменялась на хаус и транс музыку. Как и у любого популярного танца у шаффла начали появляться подстили и вариации, а за первоначальным стилем закрепилось название «Melbourne Shuffle».
